Prep boys soccer: Mavs win 3A District soccer championship

In 2017, the Meadowdale Mavericks boys soccer team finished their season with just one win, placed last in the 13-team 3A Wesco League and failed to qualify for the postseason District 1 tournament.

Fast forward two years and you can call the 2019 Mavs the District 1 soccer champions.

The motivated Mavericks defeated the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks 3-1 in the District 1 3A Boys Soccer Tournament championship match played Friday at Shoreline Stadium.

Meadowdale, the No. 2 seed in the district tournament, outlasted the No. 1-seeded Tomahawks on a warm evening in Shoreline with a pair of second-half goals to pull away for the victory.

For senior Cole Jackson, who was on that 2017 team that went 1-13-2, winning the district crown this year was “awesome.”

“My sophomore year we had one win,” Jackson noted. “We’ve progressively gotten better; and this is the peak right now.”

Jackson believes that, for players like himself that went through the depths of the 2017 season, that experience has helped contribute to the 2019 success — and made winning on Friday that much sweeter.

“We know what it’s like to lose and know what it takes to win,” Jackson said.

Winning the district championship was one of a number of goals set by the Mavericks prior to the start of the 2019 season, said Coach Mike Nelson.

“It’s a box that we get to check off now,” Nelson said after Friday’s win. “Going into it, the boys, they had the heart, they had the desire, they had the athleticism and the soccer ability. It was a goal they put together; it was a goal they wanted.”

The Mavs will celebrate their district title this weekend, but Nelson said that Monday will bring preparations for the teams’ venture into the 3A state championship tourney that will likely begin for Meadowdale on Wednesday, May 14.

“We’ll get back to work on Monday,” Nelson promised. “This is done and all we have now is to look forward now; enjoy the moment but at the same time — ‘let’s get back to work.’”

With the district title, Meadowdale will be the No. 1 representative from District 1 in the WIAA State 3A Boys Soccer Tournament that begins with matches early in the week; the Mavs will open the single-elimination tourney in a matchup against the No. 5 representative from District 2, made up of teams from the KingCo and Metro Leagues.

The state tourney 3A bracket will likely be finalized on Sunday.
