Meadowdale’s Dominic Giordano cracked the top 50 at last year’s Class 3A state boys cross country championships.
As a sophomore, Giordano took 49th overall in his first appearance at the state meet.
“He’s looking to make a return trip to state,” Meadowdale coach Kris Maraveller said.
Giordano leads what should be a strong boys squad that had 25 runners turn out. Senior Chikodi Ezeokeke brings plenty of experience to the team. Sophomore Brian Primm had a solid freshman season and junior Josh Verzola is another top returner.
“We had a good strong group coming back,” Maraveller said. “The boys are looking strong. We’re hoping to improve on last year.”
The Meadowdale girls team is a work in progress as the Mavericks lost four out of their top five runners from last season.
Compounding the losses is a relatively low turnout of only nine runners. Maraveller will look to junior Amelia Ball to provide leadership to her teammates, many of whom are brand new to the sport.
Maraveller, however, points to sophomore Alexandria Chang and senior Megan Hoppe as two individuals who are showing great potential.
