Prep football: Eagles soar over Mavs 63-42

After giving up 58 points to Snohomish on Oct. 25, the Meadowdale Mavericks were hoping for a better defensive effort in the team’s 3A Wesco League crossover  game against the Arlington Eagles. But the Mavs’ defensive woes continued as there was no stopping Arlington sophomore Trent Nobach and the Eagles’ high-flying offense.

The Eagles soared to a 63-42 victory over the Mavericks on a cold night at Arlington High School Friday.

Arlington reached the end zone on nine of their 10 offensive possessions in the contest. The only time an Eagles’ possession didn’t end with a score is when kicker Cole Cramer missed a 41-yard field goal attempt late in the fourth quarter.

It wasn’t until that final quarter that Arlington eventually broke away and secured the win as Meadowdale had kept the game close — even tying the contest at 35-35 early in the third quarter with a Hussain Al-Mayyahi 45-yard touchdown run. But the Eagles proved too much for the Mavericks to handle in the end.

“We had a couple things go wrong for us there late in the third quarter, early fourth quarter, that kind of let the game slip away from us,” said Mavs’ Coach James Harmon.

Nobach completed 12 of 14 pass attempts for 324 yards and seven touchdowns for Arlington in the win. Two of Nobach’s TD strikes – a 35-yarder to Luke Brown and a 41-yard strike to Cade Younger — followed Al-Mayyahi’s game-tying third-quarter run. The Eagles then added a Jaden Roskelley eight-yard touchdown run later in the fourth quarter to boost the Eagles’ lead to 56-35 and effectively ended any chance of a Maverick comeback.

Al-Mayyahi had a total of three touchdowns — two rushing and one through the air — to lead the Meadowdale offense. The senior ran for 157 yards on 10 carries in the game.

Meadowdale quarterback Hunter Moen ran for a touchdown and completed 11 of 22 pass attempts for 188 yards and two TDs, but the senior was also frustrated throughout the game, throwing a fourth-quarter interception and having a second-quarter rushing touchdown run nullified due to a Mavs’ penalty.

With the loss, Meadowdale gets the No. 6 Wesco League seed for the Week 10 3A playoffs. Meadowdale will have to go to Bellevue to face the 2A/3A KingCo League champion Bellevue Wolverines on Friday, Nov. 8, or Saturday, Nov. 9, in a loser-out playoff contest.

Harmon reminded his squad that despite the setback to Arlington, the team still has football to play this year.

“The fight’s not over,” Harmon said. “We have another week to go. We’re obviously a good football team; we just got to clean up this-or-that and then maybe things happen better for us.”
