Prep football: Mavs finish year with postseason loss to Bellevue

The 2019 Meadowdale Mavericks football season was on the line Friday night as the Mavs traveled to Bellevue High School to take on the 7-2 KingCo Conference champion, Wolverines.

From the start, Bellevue unleashed a pounding ground game that chewed up yards as well as time of possession, while Meadowdale struggled to find an answer to stop it.

By halftime, the Mavs found themselves down 29-0.

Meadowdale opened up the passing game out of the break and scored first, but every time they would score, Bellevue would answer, winning the game 57-21 to move on to the WIAA 3A State tournament.

“It’s never easy,” said head coach James Harmon on his Mavs’ season-ending loss.

“There’s only one football team (in each classification) that ends their season happy, and even that team has kids that don’t get to play football ever again and it’s hard to swallow.”

The bright spot for the Mavs was the teamwork between their two senior First Team All-Wesco players — quarterback Hunter Moen and wide receiver Mason Vaughn. Moen found Vaughn three times for touchdown throws, accounting for all of the Mavericks points.

“Their connection is obviously a strong one,” Harmon said of his two seniors after the game.

“When times get tough, they tend to find each other. Mason makes the plays that Hunter needs, and Hunter always seems to find him and get him the football. They have been dynamic for two years. It’s unfortunate their season, and their time together, has to end. Those two kids’ futures are very bright.” Harmon continued.

The season concludes Harmon’s first as head coach at Meadowdale.

“I told the kids after the game, that I wouldn’t have wanted to do it with any other group of kids,” he said. “I’m really proud of our coaches, I’m proud of our supporters, and I couldn’t be more proud of our efforts.”
