After a regular season that saw only four wins in 20 games, the Lynnwood Royals still had a chance to slip into the District 1 3A Softball Tournament that takes place next week. But that chance slipped away on Thursday as the Royals yielded four runs to the Shorewood Thunderbirds early on and then were never able to recover.
The Royals fell to the T-Birds 8-3 in a district tourney play-in game staged Thursday at Meridian Park in Shoreline.
The Royals were doomed in the contest when Shorewood scored four runs off five hits in the third inning. The Thunderbirds loaded the bases with no outs after singles by Rebecca Carson and Sophie Feise and a base-on-balls by Gracie Long; RBI singles by Molly Starney and Skylar Tillman followed.
Lynnwood’s long third inning continued as Long was able to score from third base on a passed ball, then Shorewood’s Haley Canada punch an RBI single up the middle to lift the score to 4-0.
The Royals showed some grit by tallying a single run in the top of the fifth inning and two more in the top of the sixth. But each time Lynnwood seemed to show a little spark, the Thunderbirds doused it with pairs of runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.
Jayden Angell picked up two of the Royals’ seven hits in the contest while teammate Grace DeSota smacked a home run. Feise led the T-Birds’ hitting attack by going 4-for-4 in the tilt.
With Thursday’s loss, the 2019 season for the Lynnwood Royals comes to an end; the team finished the year with an overall record of 4-17.
