Edmonds School District prep track athletes found the hot conditions at Mount Tahoma High School to their liking as the 3A State Track and Field Championships got underway on Thursday.

Participants from Lynnwood, Edmonds-Woodway and Mountlake Terrace High Schools put up some strong results during the first day of the three-day meet.

Sisters Mikayla and Malia Pivec placed third and fourth respectively in the girls 1600 meter race, scoring 11 team points and putting Lynnwood in third place in the team competition after the first day. Holy Names Academy teammates Jordan Oakes and Erin Ripple finished 1-2 in the 1600.

On the boys’ side, Edmonds-Woodway’s Miler Haller brought home a sixth place finish in the boys 1600 in a personal best time of 4:18.91. Warrior teammate Grant Whitcutt also picked up a sixth place in the boys pole vault. With Haller and Whitcutt’s results, E-W stands tied for fourth place in the team standings after the first day.

Preliminary heats were run on Thursday for the girls and Mountlake Terrace did well enough in 100 hurdles and 800 relay to qualify for their respective finals later in the meet.

With her time of 15.74 in the second preliminary heat, Mountlake Terrace senior McKenna Hunt will run in the 100 hurdles final Friday afternoon. The Hawk girls 800 relay team of Tayler McCulloch, Sophia Parsons, Julia Hart and Isabel Kembel grabbed the last qualifying berth into that relay event finals with a time of 1:46.89 and will run again Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.

Mountlake Terrace’s Alisha Clingan finished her stellar high school athletic career by placing 10th in the girls javelin with a toss of 106-03.

The state meet continues on both and Friday and Saturday, May 29-30, at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma with more Edmonds School District athletes scheduled to compete.

In other state championship results, Meadowdale’s Morgan Rood finished tied for 12th at the 3A Girls State Golf Championships at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland. Rood shot a 163 over two rounds at the par 72 course. Sarah Rhee of Ingraham won the individual state title by three strokes with a score of 139; Mercer Island won the 3A team championship.
