Fans of Lynnwood, Edmonds-Woodway and Mountlake Terrace track and field teams all had reasons to cheer Saturday as athletes from each school captured medals. But those rooting for the Royals could cheer the loudest as the Lynnwood girls won the 3A State team championship.
The Royals scored 55 team points, seven better than second place Kamiakin, to take home the state 3A girls team title.
The Mountlake Terrace Hawks girls’ squad finished third in the team scoring, their fourth top-ten placement at state in-a-row. The Edmonds-Woodway Warrior girls placed 12th in the state team rankings.
Mountlake Terrace’s Chinne Okoronkwo earned two more individual championships Saturday to add to her 3A Girls Long Jump title captured on Friday. Okoronkwo won both the 3A Girls Pole Vault and the 3A Girls Triple Jump competitions. It was her fourth straight state title in the triple jump.
Okoronkwo ends her high school sports career with a total of nine individual state championships and as the most decorated Terrace athlete in the school’s history.
In a race full of top local runners, Edmonds-Woodway’s Yukino Parle won the 3A Girls 3200 Meters in a time of 10:49.05. Lynnwood’s Malia Pivec finished second just 1.11 seconds behind Parle. Mountlake Terrace’s Katherine Walter placed sixth and E-W’s Olivia Meader-Yetter came in ninth.
In addition to Pivec’s runner-up finish in the 3200 meters, other Royals had good outings at the state track and field championships in Tacoma on Saturday. Lynnwood’s Jordyn Edwards picked up two individual medals, a second place in the 3A Girls 400 Meters and an eighth place in the 3A Girls 200 Meters.
Edwards was also part of the Royals’ relay team that placed second in the 3A Girls 4×400 Meter Relay on Saturday.
Edmonds-Woodway’s Vernice Keyes finished second in the 3A Girls Discus with a personal-best toss of 127 feet – 7 inches.
Lynnwood’s Rita Sakharov followed up her fifth place finish in Friday’s 3A Girls 100 Meter Hurdles by grabbing third place in the 3A Girls 300 Meter Hurdles on Saturday.
Malia Pivec’s older sister, Mikayla, earned a fourth place in the 3A Girls 800 Meter, an event that saw Mountlake Terrace’s Jessica Ong also pick up a podium finish. Ong ran to a seventh place spot in the event.
Edmonds-Woodway’s Allyson Ely edged out Hannah Dobson of Nathan Hale and Brittany Blaskovich of Lake Washington to grab the eighth place medal in the 3A Girls Pole Vault.
On the boys’ side, E-W’s Grant Whitcutt finished fourth in the 3A Boys High Jump, giving him a second medal at this year’s state meet. Whitcutt had previously earned a fifth place in the 3A Boys Pole Vault on Thursday.
The Warriors’ 4×200 meter relay squad ran to a sixth place finish in the state final on Saturday.
A pair of E-W long distance runners also earned strong placements on the state meet’s final day. In the 3A Boys 3200 Meter, Matthew Park placed seventh while teammate Sam McCloughan finished tenth.
In the Mixed Javelin Throw for ambulatory (disabled) athletes, Mountlake Terrace’s Matt Guardino came out in first place with a toss of 73 feet – 1 inch. Teammates Luke Lamp and Jason Ernst finished second and fourth respectively.
