Lynnwood Royal senior Mikayla Pivec won her first individual state title Thursday to lead the contingent of Edmonds School District prep athletes competing at the WIAA State Track & Field Championships in Tacoma.

Edmonds-Woodway’s Grant Whitcutt finished fifth in the 3A boys pole vault with a leap of 14-00.00. Meadowdale’s Cyrus Marshall placed 12th in the event with an effort of 13-00.00.

Competitors from all four Edmonds School District high schools were at Mt. Tahoma High School Thursday for the first day of competition in the three-day state meet.

E-W athletes brought home other strong finishes on Thursday: Hannah Hicks tied for ninth in the 3A Girls High Jump while Matthew Park placed 11th and Grady Okeson finished 15th in the 3A Boys 1600 Meters.

Pivec easily out-distanced the competition in the 3A girls javelin event with a toss of 147-00, more than 13 feet farther than the second-place effort of Sumners’ Rhaven Dean.

Lynnwood’s Emily Smatlak placed 13th in the javelin with a throw of 103-05.

Pivec added the 3A State Girls Javelin Champion medal to a personal trophy case that already includes titles from the 2015 3A State Girls 4×400 Meter Relay team and Lynnwood’s 2014-2015 3A State Girls Basketball Championship team.

Pivec added another impressive finish to her prep resume on Thursday, placing fourth in the 3A Girls 1600 Meters with a time of 4:57.31, just .08 seconds behind third place Micaela Kostecka of Mt. Spokane.

Pivec was also a member of the Lynnwood 4×400 meter relay team that won their preliminary heat race on Thursday in a time of 3:59.14. The team qualifies for the 3A girls 4×400 relay finals late Saturday afternoon.

Competition at the state meet in Tacoma resumes at 10 a.m. Friday and continues through Saturday.
