Lynnwood hosts a public hearing on the city’s Vegetation Control Integrated Pest Management Plan at 7 p.m., March 24 in the City Council Chambers.
Interested citizens are invited to attend this public hearing and to provide comments, either orally or in writing.
The Lynnwood Public Works Department is in the process of drafting a Vegetation Control Integrated Pest Management Plan (IPMP) guiding how it controls weeds and other vegetation in public right-of-ways (streets, sidewalks, etc…), ponds, and ditches. The draft can be read at: www.ci.lynnwood.wa.us/ipmp
This plan is applicable to the Public Works Department only.
The primary means of vegetation control are manual and/or mechanical (mowers, tractors, weed-eaters, etc…). A specific process is detailed for how, when, and where herbicides will be used, should the decision to use it be made. Herbicides will not be used to control vegetation in ponds, ditches, streams, wetlands, and drainage facilities.
When authorized, herbicides will primarily be applied to cracks in curb and gutter, extruded curb, and traffic islands. It will not be applied in areas where there is a planting strip between the curb and the sidewalk, or directly over or within 10 feet from a drain inlet (and 20 feet from a stream, wetland or sensitive area). Spraying will not occur if rain is predicted within 72 hours following application.
Public notice will be made on the city’s website, and in city buildings at least 1 week prior to application. Notice will remain for at least 1 week after application. All residents have the right to opt-out of spraying in front of their homes.
Public Works only uses 1 chemical pesticide, the herbicide glyphosate (commonly known as Round-Up). It does not or plan to use any other pesticide in the operation of our duties.
The City Council will approve the final plan, by resolution, prior to implementation.
