New Rec Center now open to the public

The ribbon has been cut and Lynnwood’s newly expanded Rec Center is now open to the public.

The 16-month, $25 million renovation adds dozens of new and improved activities for people of all ages. Kids can clock their speed down the two water slides, float in the lazy river, play water basketball or volleyball, or get splashed by the 50-gallon bucket.

There are also family and adult hot tubs, wellness and lap pools, a sauna, and family changing rooms.

Other features include two racquetball courts, a fitness studio, cardio and weight room, and brand new playground.

“We are extremely excited to see this building reopen to the community, and the be able to provide some new opportunities for play, health and wellness,” Parks and Rec Director Lynn Sordel said.

The city hopes the new Rec Center will be an economic driver as well. “We have partnerships that they’re investigating because people like hoteliers love to have the fact that they can bring someone to Lynnwood,” Mayor Don Gough said.

The children’s area of the pool has water volleyball and basketball, sprayers. a 50-gallon bucket and lazy river with rapids.

There are to water slides — one uses innertubes and the other is a body slide.

The wellness pool is designed for therapeutic use. The city has even ordered a stainless steel wheelchair.

The 3,000 square foot cardio/weight room features Precor equipment. Three of the machines are wheelchair accessible. Clients can meet with specialists to design a health and fitness plan.

The 1,600 square foot dance and fitness studio will offer classes such as Zumba, yoga, Jazzercise and even fencing. The flooring is designed to be easy on the joints.

There are seven private family changing rooms in addition to new men’s and women’s locker rooms.

The playground has new equipment and a soft surface.

In addition, there is a viewing room with free internet access, reflexology path, retractable walls and ceilings, several energy efficient upgrades, rooms that can be rented for parties and meetings, and expanded parking.

Daily, 10-visit and annual passes are available, with discounts for Lynnwood residents. Check the fee schedule for the pricing.
