Initiative sponsor Tim Eyman held a news conference this morning in Lynnwood to announce that he has enough signatures for his anti-red light camera initiative.

The measure is in response to a vote by the Mukilteo City Council to install photo enforcement cameras along Mukilteo Speedway. The council reversed that decision earlier this week.

“Time and again, Mukilteo citizens who signed our petitions said ‘we don’t want our small town to become another Lynnwood.’  People hate the cameras because they’re just a Big Brother, money-making scheme for governments to pick the pockets of taxpayers,” Eyman said in a statement.

The initiative would require a two-thirds vote of the Mukilteo City Council and a majority vote of the people in order to install red light cameras. It also limits the fines to the cost of the least expensive parking ticket.

Eyman says nearly half of the active voters in Mukilteo signed the initiative. It was co-sponsored by the group BanCams.com.
