Registration is now open for Lynnwood University, an eight week course offered to residents free of charge.
The goal is to increase awareness about how city government works and to empower citizens to better access programs and services in a fun and interactive way. Demonstrations, tours and hands-on activities are presented by city staff, council members and the mayor.
“After participating in Lynnwood University a lot of participants become volunteers,” Community Outreach Specialist Julie Moore told us. “I start to see them come to council meetings and other community meetings. In general, they feel like they have a stake in their community.”
Some of the highlights include trying on firefighting gear and climbing the 100-foot ladder, learning how so solve a criminal case or touring the waste water treatment plant.
The courses take place on Thursdays between Sept. 8 – Oct. 27, from 6 – 8:30 p.m.
You can register online or call 425-670-5023.
waste of money

I just had a fantastic idea.
This Lynnwood University could actually be the solution to a number of
the city’s current challenges. Please
allow me, as a couple of small tweaks will have to be made……
Instead of having the instruction or teaching being done by
the council members and the mayor perhaps we should get some real educators from any one of the cities actual higher education institutions. This way the Universities attendees would learn from someone other than the local paragons of dysfunctional, inefficient and fiscally irresponsible government.
Then we could require the council members and mayor to attend Lynnwood University. While we are at it we should get the police to attend as well, maybe if they felt like they had a stake in the community they would be less apt to run off to neighboring municipalities.
The results are a responsibly educated public, council members and a mayor that understand how governments works and cops with a stake
in the community, plus everyone gets to play on the fire engine when it is
over.
Bam! Massive city problems solved right here on Lynnwood Today.
I gotta run. I have to get to work on fixing this credit rating thingie.
