The ramp from southbound I-5 to southbound I-405 will close on Saturday night so crews can install a high-friction coating to the ramp.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, the high-friction surface treatment is a process that attaches sand-like aggregate to the roadway using industrial-strength glue. This creates a grittier road surface, giving tires extra traction in wet weather.

“Adding this treatment to the ramps will improve traction for drivers, particularly in rainy weather,” WSDOT Traffic Engineer Dina Swires said. “We treated ramps on westbound I-90 and eastbound SR 526 last year, and we’ve already seen a tremendous reduction in wet pavement crashes at those locations.”

The ramp will reopen on Sunday, July 24 at 10 a.m. Signed detours will be in place until then.
