After good runs in their district tournament the past three seasons, the Lynnwood Royals were hoping this year would be no different. But with one kick on Thursday, that hope vanished.
The Royals were defeated by the Arlington Eagles 2-1 in overtime in a District 1 3A Boys Soccer Tournament loser-out match played at Edmonds Stadium. The Eagles’ Juan Castillo scored a golden goal 90 seconds into the first overtime period to end the Royals’ 2019 season.
Castillo fired a free kick from 31 yards out, over a wall of Lynnwood defenders and just out of reach of Royals’ goalkeeper William Juarez-Ramirez. The ball bounced off the crossbar and into the goal for the Arlington game-winner.
Royals’ players either stood in disbelief or fell to the ground in sorrow with the sudden end to the game.
The overtime was made necessary after the Eagles, the district tournament No. 9 seed, had tied the match at 1-1 with goal in the 63rd minute. Castillo had taken another free kick, this one from 21 yards out, that Juarez-Ramirez stopped with a diving save; Arlington’s Juan Hernandez pounced on the rebound and pounded it into the Lynnwood goal.
The Royals, the district tourney No. 8 seed, had led for most of the game prior to the Hernandez goal; Lynnwood freshman Ali Alzeer had scored to put the Royals up 1-0 on a penalty kick in the 10th minute.
With Thursday’s loss, Lynnwood ends the year with an overall record of 9-5-1.

In other Lynnwood sports on Thursday, the Royals’ baseball team had a more positive outcome in their district tournament loser-out game. Lynnwood defeated the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks 11-6 to advance to the double-elimination portion of the District 1 3A Baseball Tournament.
Elsewhere, the Royals’ softball team lost 17-2 to the Mountlake Terrace Hawks and the Lynnwood girls golf squad finished third in the four-team Edmonds School District Tournament held at the Nile Golf & Country Club.
