The North Sound SeaWolves trailed early and never were able to recover, losing a Premier Development League Northwest Division match 5-1 to the Vancouver Whitecaps U-23 Sunday at UBC Thunderbird Stadium.
The SeaWolves, who tied first-place Victoria Saturday, fell to 0-2-1. Vancouver improved to 2-2.
“It was obviously a disappointing match,” SeaWolves coach Ed Moore said. “Vancouver attacked strong and we didn’t come out prepared. We’ve got to play better from the start.”
The game featured 28 fouls, including 17 by the Whitecaps. North Sound found itself playing down a man for the last 30 minutes as Victor Vasquez picked up his second yellow card of the match. By then, the Whitecaps already led 3-1.
Vancouver took the lead in the second minute on a goal by Harry Lakhan. Lakhan added a second 24th minute and Spencer DeBoice made it 3-0 in the 37th minute. SeaWolves’ midfielder Brad Jacobson scored his first goal of the season just before halftime but in all North Sound managed just five shots to 19 by the Whitecaps.
DeBoice and Niall Cousens added late goals for the Whitecaps.
SeaWolves keeper Ryan Herman was under fire the entire match but finished with six saves.
“It’s not the way we wanted our trip to end,” Moore said. “But we were able to get a point against Victoria and anytime you go on the road, it’s a good experience. We just wish we could have had a better result.”
The SeaWolves next play an 11 a.m. match Friday at Portland, which defeated North Sound 2-1 in the SeaWolves’ season-opener. North Sound plays four of its next five matches on the road, returning to Edmonds Stadium only on June 7 against the Whitecaps.
