Sound Live Sports Network recognized for unique partnership with students

SLSN logoThe Washington Journalism Education Association (WJEA) last weekend recognized the unique partnership between the Sound Live Sports Network and Mountlake Terrace High School’s student journalists and broadcast students, who have been livestreaming sports from Edmonds-Woodway, Meadowdale, Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace high schools.

The MTHS student newspaper, The Hawkeye, received the association’s Emerging Technologies Best of Show award for its website. But Hawkeye advisor Vince DeMiero noted that “the judges also recognized SLSN and the collaboration between Hawkeye, Hawk Broadcast Network and MLTnews as a significant element.”

“Frankly, what we have going here is exceedingly unique and amazing,” DeMiero added. “The WJEA judges took notice of the entire offering of information and services that readers can find at the Hawkeye’s website – including the Twitter feeds, Facebook link, but particularly took note of the live sports streaming.”

Teresa Wippel, publisher of the My Neighborhood News Network — My Edmonds News, Lynnwood Today and MLTnews – and founder of SLSN, said she appreciates acknowledgement of this as a “team award.”

“The Sound Live Sports Network’s partnership with the entire Edmonds School District is rewarding on so many levels,” Wippel said. “The students have an opportunity to gain on-the-job experience in broadcast field production. All of us at SLSN benefit by being able to provide high-quality broadcasts that showcase not only our athletes and coaches, but the work of MTHS broadcast and journalism students and staff.”

“This award would not have been possible without the extraordinary efforts of MTHS Broadcast Instructor Angelo Comeaux, who has put in countless hours supervising students at stadiums, fields and gyms across the Edmonds School District — as well as field trips to state basketball and softball — to ensure live coverage of the district’s teams,” Wippel added.

Wippel also cited the support of Sound Live Sports Network advertisers as critical to covering streaming costs and also noted the broadcast talents for color and play-by-play provided by MTHS alumnus Steve Willits and EWHS parent Keith Nealey, as well as student producer Eddie Mendoza.

“Our SLSN crew has big talent and an even bigger heart for our student athletes,” Wippel said.

SLSN plans to expand the livestreaming sports broadcasts to include high school students from all of the district’s high schools next year. Interested students can email Angelo Comeaux at ComeauxA@edmonds.wednet.edu.
