Is your staycation idea list getting short? We just might have something new to add to the top of your list. Just a quick jump across the border sits Historic Stewart Farm, a heritage site circa the pioneer years of settlers in Surrey, BC (approximately 1880-1910). Featuring a gorgeous restored farmhouse and beautiful grounds nestled on the river, with one-of-a-kind seaside restaurants five minutes down the road, it’s definitely day trip worthy.

But if you are expecting a hushed tour of a stuffy heritage site, you are mistaken. With costumed guides and fresh baking wafting through the house, it is by all means peaceful and picturesque, as if a sepia-toned photograph came to life. Depending on the day you visit, Historic Stewart Farm is many different things. On a weekday you can expect a quiet visit, likely with a few families enjoying a picnic on the grounds, people walking their dogs through the surrounding heritage trails and maybe a handful of people practicing their painting, photography or yoga.

On an event day, like Pioneer Fair on July 2 (more below on this event) and on many weekends, you can expect live music, dancing and much more. Whatever day you visit, there is vintage dress up for kids, crafts, guided and self-tours and spectacular picnic and sunset photo ops. Historic Stewart Farm is a local favorite for families looking to unplug and let the kids loose, all on a dime. The site itself is FREE (donation suggested) but lucky for us south of the border, the exchange rate is in our favor so the shopping and eateries nearby are nearly 25 percent off.

Come This Weekend for Pioneer Fair!

Saturday, July 2 is the perfect day for your visit if a good old-fashioned party is what you’re after. Taking place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Pioneer Fair will feature…cue huge breath…live music, highland dancing, a stilt walker, carnival games, vintage mustaches, a food truck and more! Free, all ages and just a five-minute drive down the highway from the Peace Arch border. Pack up the family and get ready to party. Can’t come on July 2? The Amazing Farm Scavenger Hunt is taking place Aug. 13 and the site is open Tuesday-Sunday with something happening every day.

Location

Head North on the 99 and take exit 10 to King George BLVD/ Crescent Beach. A few minutes along tree-lined Crescent Road and Historic Stewart Farm sits on the right. There is parking on site and more if you take the next right at Elgin Heritage Park. The site sits on the Nicomekl River so bring your kayak if you have one! After a few hours at the farm, Crescent Beach is another five minutes down the road, offering ice cream shops, cute restaurants and, of course, a beautiful beach.
