On Monday, more than 300 teen and adult volunteers chose to make this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service a day “on” rather than a day “off.”

Lynnwood-area students spent the day volunteering across the county, including students from Lynnwood, Meadowdale and Archbishop Murphy High Schools. Additionally, St. Vincent de Paul thrift store in Lynnwood hosted a service project where teens sorted and organized donations.

Marking its sixth year, the service event featured 14 projects throughout Snohomish County. Projects ranged from planting trees and park clean ups, to assisting food banks and senior centers.

And it’s not just the county’s teens getting in on the fun. This year, more than 40 adults also volunteered and led groups of students.

“We look forward to the MLK Day of Service all year,” said Paulette Jacobson, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Director of Snohomish County, sponsored by Catholic Community Services. “Our Senior Corps volunteers work alongside teens, sharing their skills and experiences. This intergenerational match-up is fun for both the seniors and teens.”

This annual day of service is a partnership between United Way of Snohomish County, YMCA of Snohomish County, Catholic Community Services, Senior Corps-RSVP and United Parcel Service.
