Snohomish County Parks recently collected random data on the swimming ability of children from four Snohomish County school districts — Edmonds, Everett, Mukilteo and Snohomish school districts.
What they found is somewhat surprising. Over 70 percent of 5th graders tested could not demonstrate minimum swimming ability to enter water deeper than chest level. In other words, less than 30 percent of 5th graders could swim.
“Given this rather alarming data I would like to encourage everyone to consider making swim lessons a summer 2010 goal — for infants, toddlers, children, teens and adults,” said Recreation Supervisor Tony Trofimczuk.
Although the Lynnwood pool is being renovated, parents do have several options for swimming lessons nearby:
- McCollum Park Pool in Everett
- Mountlake Terrace Pool
- YMCA of Mukilteo, Everett, Mill Creek or Shoreline.
