National Board certification is the highest credential in the teaching profession. Certification is voluntary and achieved through a rigorous assessment that typically takes more than a year. It measures what teachers should know and be able to do. It also requires them to demonstrate how their activities, both inside and outside of the classroom, improve student achievement. The application process includes submitting portfolio entries and passing exams.
