The award includes a $3,000 donation from Safeco Insurance for Washington Kids in Transition and entry in the Safeco Make More Happen Contest for summer, where the public is encouraged to vote for their favorite insurance agency-charity team.
More than 450 students attending school in the Edmonds School District are considered homeless — living in cars, tents, shelters, and/or temporary housing units. Many of these students leave school for the day and may not have anything to eat until they arrive to school the next morning. Washington Kids in Transition, under the direction of Kim Gorney, is available to help by providing after-school snack bags for students, emergency motel vouchers for local families and other services.
“Having Washington Kids in Transition has been such a huge relief,” said Ashley Dawson, Student Support Advocate at Mountlake Terrace High School. “There are so many times that we are not able to quickly obtain resources for our students and WKIT is available and so quick with delivering items! I know that if there is ever anything I need, Kim and her group are only a phone call away.”
As a community agency, Insurance Services Group knew its team had the resources to help Washington Kids in Transition. Since January, Insurance Services Group has helped pack more than 1,000 snacks for students in need and also organized a food donation drop-off point at its Edmonds office for community members to donate snack foods any time. In addition, the agency supports the nonprofit through its community partner referral program, donating $10 to Washington Kids in Transition for every referral the agency receives from a client.
The Safeco Make More Happen Contest for summer began Monday, July 27 and runs through Aug. 17. The three teams with the most online votes will win additional donations from Safeco for their charities: $10,000 for first place, $5,000 for second and $3,000 for third.
If total votes in the online contest reach a 28,000-vote goal, Safeco will give away an additional $500 to each of the 33 charities in the contest, for a total of $16,500.
